Don’t you know that you’re Toxic
Don’t you know that you’re Toxic
“You’re Toxic I’m slipping under, With a taste of your poison paradise, I’m addicted to you, Don’t you know that you’re Toxic” ~Britney Spears
Given all the media hoopla around the food and drinks going into our bodies’ one would think Britney Spears sang this song about the
Pumpkin Spice Latte. Or maybe she was singing about Soda, or candy, or chocolate bars or any other sugary snack currently on the market. Then again it doesn’t even have to be sugar, the word “toxic” is getting add to food articles the same way “style” gets added to fashion correlation.
So I’m here to bring the truth about what “toxic” actually means. Not from a source known as the “FoodBabe”with no educational background in nutrition or fitness. Now don’t get me wrong here, I am not an advocate of downing sugary foods and drinks filled with fake sugars. We all know those are not healthy. Scare tactics and false information however is a huge problem. It causes people not to trust any source of information and attempt to convince us that everything is bad for you to just screw it and join the “it’s ok to be fat movement” because we’re screwed anyways. That is the problem here folks. You have these so called experts using words they don’t understand. You will read here what toxicity and toxin actually mean. Along with the facts on what kind of toxicity is an actual problem.
As always let’s start with the science.
Toxicity is defined as the degree to which a substance can damage an organism. Toxicity can refer to the effect on a whole organism, such as an animal, bacterium, or plant, as well as the effect on a substructure of the organism, such as a cell (cytotoxicity) or an organ such as the liver(hepatotoxicity).
A Toxin is defined as a poisonous substance produced within living cells or organisms; synthetic toxicants created by artificial processes are thus excluded.
Gee, now does any of that happen when your drink a Pumpkin Spice Latte?
So thanks to use of false statements we have everyone doing “detox”. It’s all about getting the “toxins” out of our bodies. This is done by avoiding certain foods for a few weeks or drinking “detox solution” for a few days. Then after your detox you reintroduce these foods back into your daily eating and if you “feel bad” then those foods are toxic to you and you must never eat them again or face certain death!! Notice how all of these “health sites” and fitness bloggers who scream toxins all have a cleanse or detox program they are trying to sell you. I hope the “ah ha” moment just hit and you putting 2 + 2 together. The only toxic thing here is the minds of these jerks that are scaring you into buying their bull crap products.
Now here are the real facts about sugar and our consumption of it.
Chronic toxicity is the ability of a substance or mixture of substances to cause harmful effects over an extended period, usually upon repeated or continuous exposure, sometimes lasting for the life of the exposed organism.
Now does that sound like something that might happen if you consume a Pumpkin Spice Latte on a day to day basis? Along with a pumpkin scone, pumpkin muffin with cream cheese frosting or slice of pumpkin loaf.
This is where all of these bloggers start with their hearts in the right places and then they see the dollar signs. Then they sell their sole to the devil and start pushing product that can do more harm than good. (Which you will see in my next blog on detoxing coming out this weekend)
It comes down to moderation and eating real food. It comes down to that time when you want to have some sugary food snacks like cake or scones. You just need to make sure that it is “real”. That means it’s made with real sugar, real flour and eggs. The best way I want you to think about your dessert or treat is to ask yourself this question. Is this how my Grandma made dessert? If you can’t say yes, then don’t eat it. I mean come on, if you are going to have a cupcake don’t you want a real one with real frosting and all that tasty goodness? Not some cupcake made in a lab. If you’re going to treat yourself, treat yourself. Same with the Pumpkin Spice Latte, if you are going to have it, have it; but first get the smallest size, ask for no whip and don’t add a snack to go with it. Again it’s about chronic use, not one time use.
Chronic Toxicity is a serious issue and is causing so many in our society to be overweight. It’s over use of fake sugars that do nothing for the body. So now that you are on the track to good health; you should start grabbing some fruit when you get the crazy sugar craving. Fruit is called nature’s candy for reason. (Don’t over eat it, 2-3 servings a day is all you need)
Make smart, consistent, healthy choices and you will not have to worry about Chronic Toxicity. Make the wrong choices over and over again and then sadly the FoodBabe will be proved right and we can’t have that now can we.
